UWC HIV/AIDS Schools Partnership Programme

Recognizing the pivotal role that schools play in providing AIDS education for young people the HIV/AIDS Schools Partnership Programme formed links with 15 high school across the Western Cape in 2009. These schools are situated in Mitchell’s Plain, Khayalitsha and the Boland/Wellington areas. The model used in the programme focuses on targeting school principals, educators, school governing bodies, parents and specific learner groups in these schools.  The programme allows for the strengthening of protective influences on young people from both the schools and home and provide up-to-date information and practical assistance to educators.  A strong focus of the programme is the use of senior students as peer educators in these schools to coordinate and present HIV prevention activities. The programme is fully funded by USAID and is currently managed by Joachim Jacobs who can be reached at 021 959-3091.
